Bilbao Athletic Reportedly Interested In Sevilla Defender Felipe Rodríguez Chacartegui
After a terrific first season under manager Gaizka Garitano, Bilbao Athletic are looking to build on their success and compete for promotion to the Segunda in the upcoming campaign. The Katxorros have already said goodbye to several key players from the previous year and are working hard to prepare the squad for another strong run. It now looks like their sights are set on a defender who could provide important experience.
According to a report from Estadio Deportivo, Bilbao Athletic are interested in signing Felipe Rodríguez Chacartegui from Sevilla Atlético. The 20-year-old played in nine games in the Segunda last year and is a left-back who can also function centrally if needed. With Andoni López no longer in the squad there will be open competition for the starting left-back role and Chacartegui would, in theory, be a strong candidate to earn the role if he made the switch.
The defender was born in Cadíz, formed in Cadíz, and has spent the last few years in Sevilla’s youth system. Although his mother is Basque, he was not born or raised in the Basque Country so questions have already being raised about whether or not he fits Athletic’s policy. Technically, the club says that a player must be born or formed in the Basque Country to play for the club so it will be interesting to see how this story plays out. Several sources have already said that they believe that the report is not true, which could very well be the case.
