Athletic Club And Real Sociedad Will Play The Euskal Herriko Kopa Final On 4 August
The Euskal Herriko Kopa, or Basque Country Cup, is played during the summer between the two Basque clubs that had the best records against other Basque teams in La Liga. Last year’s final saw Athletic face off against Alavés, but the match ended without a winner when referee Palencia Caballero left the field after sending off Alexis Ruano. The Lions have qualified once again and will be facing a familiar rival.
According to Noticias de Gipuzkoa, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad will play the final on 4 August at Stadium Gal in Irun, which is the home to Real Unión. Real Sociedad finished the year having earned 14 points against Basque opponents, with Athletic coming in second with 8 points earned.
Last year’s final saw both clubs feature very strong lineups despite the game not being an official cup and this summer should be much the same. Athletic will begin preseason training on 9 July and the La Liga season will be kicking off not too long after the Euskal Herriko Kopa final, so the match will give both clubs the chance to prepare their teams for the new campaign. Athletic officially announced the fixture in a press release on Thursday.
