Last season couldn’t have gone any better for Unai López. The midfielder was sent on loan to Rayo Vallecano in the Segunda in order to play regular minutes and continue his development and he definitely took a big step forward in his career. He was one of the best players in the league and helped lead the club to a first place finish in the table which secured their promotion to the Primera. Now all eyes have turned to his future with Athletic Club which looks very positive.

The 22-year-old is entering the final year of his contract, but the club has made it clear that want him to renew his deal. On Tuesday, an update was given when Onda Cero reported that López has already had talks with new manager Eduardo Berizzo who told him that he is counting on him for next season and plans to keep him in the squad. The two will meet again next week and, if all goes as planned, the midfielder is expected to sign a contract renewal for three more seasons which would see his deal run through 2022.

There is no denying that López is ready to play in La Liga. It may have taken him a while to make the jump, but his performances from last season show just what he is capable of. Other clubs have taken notice as well. According to a report from Pako Ruiz of DEIAseveral teams have reached out to Athletic with Real Betis, Huesca, and Celta Vigo all interested in signing him. He is also said to have offers from clubs in Germany and Belgium.

López has always showed signs that he could become a very special player and it finally looks like he is living up to that potential. After last season it was clear that Athletic needed some new blood in midfield and the 22-year-old looks like the perfect player to add depth and quality to the team. Berizzo’s desire to keep him in the team shows just how highly the new manager thinks of him and should have Athletic fans excited about his future at the San Mamés.
