Iker Undabarrena Has Received Offers From Four Segunda Clubs
Iker Undabarrena’s time at Athletic seems to be drawing to an end. After five years with Bilbao Athletic it has become clear that he does not have a path to the first team and, despite the club wanting him to renew his contract, he does not want to stay if he can’t compete for a place in the senior squad. His current contract is set to expire at the end of the month and unless the two parties can reach some sort of agreement, he will be leaving Athletic.
With the midfielder close to becoming a free player several clubs have already expressed interest in signing him. According to a report from Javier Beltran of AS, four clubs in the Segunda have already reached out to Undabarrena – Huesca, Almeria, Reus, and Córdoba. At this point the 23-year-old will be analyzing the offers and trying to make the best decision for his future, while also waiting to see if Athletic make another proposal before time runs out.
The majority of fans have been vocal about the fact that they do not want Undabarrena to leave and are unhappy that the club is not able to give him the chance to compete for a place in the first team. Last season saw Athletic’s midfield severely underperform and there was belief that Undabarrena would get the chance to train with the first team this summer. If a deal isn’t reached with Athletic before the end of the month he will be leaving the club. There will always be hope that he could return one day, but for now it looks as though he will be making his exit.
