Unai Simón And Athletic Club Working On Contract Renewal
Athletic Club’s goalkeeper situation has been a big talking point over the last few weeks. With Kepa Arrizabalaga entrenched as the starter, both Iago Herrerín and Alex Remiro have been outspoken about the fact that they do not want to be backups which has put the club in a difficult place. The statements have also caused some issues due to the fact that Remiro is entering the final year of his contract, but not much has been said about Bilbao Athletic’s Unai Simón who will also be out of contract next summer. Finally, there is some good news about his status.
According to a report from Javier Beltran of AS, Simón met with Athletic on Friday where the two parties began negotiating a contract renewal and both sides are said to be optimistic about reaching an agreement. The most likely scenario will see Simón sign his extension then be sent on loan somewhere in the Segunda in order to continue developing his game. A few clubs have already contacted Athletic to ask about his availability and the Basques are already studying the offers.
After playing at a very high level for Bilbao Athletic over the last two years, Simón is clearly ready to take the next step in his career. Like last summer, he will spend the preseason with the first team which will give him valuable experience. Athletic truly have an embarrassment of riches at the goalkeeping position so it is good to see the Lions prioritizing renewals in order to keep talented young players at the team. Simón’s future is very bright and it should only be a matter of time before he puts pen to paper on a new deal with Athletic Club.
