Tenerife Still Hoping To Sign Athletic Club’s Asier Villalibre On Loan
Asier Villalibre finds himself in a difficult situation this summer. Last year he joined Real Valladolid but barely played in the first half of the season and in January he made the switch to Lorca where he was able to see regular minutes. Still, he wasn’t able to do enough to do enough to convince anyone that he is ready to play in the Primera. The Athletic forward will once again be competing for his place in the first team, but will most likely have to go out on loan again.
Although new manager Eduardo Berizzo will be assessing the team during the summer and everyone will get the chance to compete for a spot in the team, it is highly unlikely that Villalibre will stay at the San Mamés. Still just 20 years old, the forward has not played well enough in the Segunda to warrant a place in the squad and it already appears as though the Lezama graduate has a suitor waiting for him.
After reports surfaced claiming that Villalibre could join Joseba Etxeberria at Tenerife, Alejandro Skale of AS has confirmed that Athletic believe a loan move to the Island would be a great opportunity for the forward to continue developing. The club is confident that Villalibre can fulfill his exciting potential, but understand that for that to happen he needs to play regularly and staying in the Segunda seems to be the best place for it. Tenerife will be losing striker Samuele Longo and have already identified Villalibre as one of their top priorities during the summer.
The chance to train under Etxeberria cannot be taken lightly. The Athletic legend has already had tremendous success developing young players and could help Villalibre find his footing against stronger competition. The striker is still very young and has his entire career in front of him so now is the time for Athletic to show patience and allow him to grow at his own pace if he is to realize his potential. The decision will ultimately come down to Berizzo, but a move to Tenerife is definitely a real possibility.
