Alavés And Leganés Interested In Signing Athletic Club Midfielder Mikel Vesga
Mikel Vesga is one of the biggest question marks surrounding Athletic this summer. The midfielder enjoyed a successful time on loan at Sporting two years ago and looked to be on his way to establishing himself in the first team. He began last season with manager Kuko Ziganda handing him a starting role, but it did not work out and he spent most of the second half of the campaign on the bench. Going into this summer he has several players ahead of him in the pecking order and could be on his way out of the club, either on loan or permanently.
According to a new report from Javier Beltran of AS, Alavés and Leganés have shown interested in signing Vesga and are monitoring the situation closely. Alavés are in need of a midfielder capable of playing in different roles and believe that the 25-year-old would be a perfect fit in their system. Meanwhile, Leganés are hoping to continue their stay in the Primera and have a good relationship with Athletic which could see a deal for Vesga materialize much more easily. Real Valladolid, Sportgin Gijon, and Real Zaragoza have also enquired about his availability.
Vesga is currently under contract with Athletic through 2021 and, if he does leave this summer, it will most likely be on loan. There is always a chance that he could be allowed to leave on a permanent deal, but Athletic would not agree to the move unless they are able to retain a buy-back clause. The 25-year-old has always shown great promise and may still have a future at the club despite what happens this summer. In the end, it will be up to Eduardo Berizzo to make the ultimate decision. Preseason training begins on 9 July and he plans on assessing the entire squad before making any decisions about who will leave. Vesga will be hoping to convince the new manager to keep him in the team, but if he can’t there will be no shortage of suitors.
