Athletic’s Pursuit Of Ander Herrera And Yuri Berchiche May Be Futile
Athletic fans can’t complain about the club not trying to sign new players this summer. After going several years without bringing in outside talent, the Lions have gone all out in an attempt to overhaul the squad and have already presented three new footballers over the past two weeks. That being said, Athletic aren’t finished yet and are still hoping to seal a deal for at least one more high profile player. However, two of their targets may be nothing more than wishful thinking at this point.
According recent report from Javier Beltran of AS, Athletic have not given up hope on signing Ander Herrera and Yuri Berchiche, but either deal seems extremely unlikely right now. Although their offers are strong, there are several other circumstances that are standing in the way of the two players coming to the San Mamés.
Ander Herrera is entering the last year of his contract with Manchester United and continues to reaffirm his desire to play out the season. The English side may be willing to sell him in order to keep from losing him for free, but there are other suitors besides Athletic with Atletico Madrid and AC Milan also monitoring the situation. Beltran’s report says that Athletic have already contacted Herrera personally and have offered him a contract that would see him become the highest paid player in the squad. Still, it would likely take the 28-year-old requesting a move to Athletic for the transfer to actually happen.
Athletic may actually have a better chance of signing Yuri Berchiche, but it is still difficult. Despite reports in France claiming that the left-back isn’t part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans moving forward, he loves life in Paris and does not want to leave the club. With his future in doubt, Berchiche is already attracting interest from clubs in England and Germany which complicates the situation. Athletic recently contacted PSG who placed a €30 million price tag on Berchiche which is a number that the Lions have no intentions of meeting. In both cases Athletic’s interest is very real, but for either transfer to take place it will most likely require the players getting involved in the process. Neither deal is impossible, mind you, but they are extremely unlikely.
