Iago Herrerín Has Offers To Leave Athletic From Clubs In England And Spain
Iago Herrerín’s future has been one of the biggest talking points surrounding Athletic for a few weeks now. The 30-year-old recently said in an interview that he does not want to spend another season as backup to Kepa Arrizabalaga and that he has received interest from “seven or eight” clubs who would like to sign him over the summer. It is clear that he wants to leave in order to be a starter somewhere else, but he also realizes that he is under contract until 2021 and will have to accept whatever decision Athletic makes.
With his future in question, several clubs are monitoring the situation closely and have even been in contact with the goalkeeper. According to a recent report from Javier Beltran of AS, Herrerín has received offers from clubs in England and Spain, with the bulk of them coming from those in La Liga. At this point the identities of these teams are not known, except for Leganés who would love to bring Herrerín back to the club after enjoying his services on loan two years ago.
Whatever happens, Athletic are not in a good situation. Herrerín does not want to sit behind Kepa for another year and is waiting to talk with new manager Eduardo Berizzo before any decisions are made. If he does leave, the Lions will have to find a new backup moving forward. Both Alex Remiro and Unai Simón are options, but they are still young and need to go on loan in order to play regularly. Most likely Athletic will have to find someone from outside the club to take Herrerín’s place. The new few weeks are going to be vitally important and Berizzo will have to figure out how to best navigate the situation.
