Athletic Club Schedule First Friendly Of The Summer Against MSV Duisburg
The regular season may have only ended just a few weeks ago but Athletic are already getting close to returning from holiday. New manager Eduardo Berizzo will begin preseason training on 9 July, leaving his players with roughly one month of vacation left, and the club has already been at work preparing for summer friendlies. Athletic plan on making an international trip as they have over the past few years and have finally announced the first of their scheduled games.
On Thursday Athletic announced that they will travel to Germany to take part in the Schauinsland-Reisen Cup of Traditions at the Schauinsland-Reisen Arena. They will play against MSV Duisburg on 28 July, and the tournament will also feature two other clubs who have yet to be announced. Taking part in the competition could mean that Athletic’s trip to Germany will serve as their international training program, although that has not been confirmed.
MSV Duisburg will be an interesting opponent. They were founding members of the Bundesliga back in 1963, but more recently have competed at lower levels. Two years ago they won the third division to earn promotion to the second division where they finished seventh last season. Manager Iliya Gruev is hoping to fight for promotion back to the top flight in the coming campaign. Meanwhile, Berizzo currently has 33 players set to report to training on 9 July which means that he has some major decisions to make this summer regarding the squad.
