Urtzi Iriondo Officially Leaves Athletic Club After Not Receiving A Contract Renewal
Urtzi Iriondo joined Lezama back in 2005 when he was just 10 years old and immediately stood out in his age group. As he progressed through the academy he eventually found his way to Bilbao Athletic in 2014 and was one of the players who helped lead the reserves to promotion. He played in 32 games in the Segunda and, after suffering relegation, the club decided to keep him in the second division in order to continue his development.
In 2016 he went on loan with Elche where he had to battle for minutes due to competition in the team, but was able to play in 20 matches. Last summer he made the switch to Granda who were hoping to fight for promotion back to the Primera, but Iriondo did not end up being a significant part of their plans. In total he featured in just one Copa del Rey match and did not play a single minute in the league due to injuries and other players in the team stepping up. Unfortunately, he was only named in the squad four times over the course of the season.
With it being clear that the left-back was not going to compete for a place in the first team, his time Athletic has come to an end. On Wednesday Athletic officially announced that Urtzi Iriondo will leave the club with his contract expiring at the end of June. The 23-year-old will now be free to decide his future and will be looking for a new club to call home as he continues his footballing career.
