Athletic Starlet Andoni López Has Attracted Interest From Real Sociedad And Eibar
Andoni López is entering the most important summer of his Athletic Club. The young left-back is one of the most exciting young players to come through Lezama in recent years and many have pegged him to eventually replace Mikel Balenziaga in the starting lineup. He made his first team debut last year under Kuko Ziganda and will now spend the preseason training under new manager Eduardo Berizzo. The 22-year-old only has one more year on his current contract and that has led to a lot of discussions about his future.
The first thing to note is that Athletic want López to sign a contract renewal. The Lions believe that he is a player of the future and have every intention of keeping him at the club for years to come. He will get the chance to fight for a place in the team this summer, but even if he isn’t able to convince Berizzo he will go on loan in the Segunda where he will have plenty of suitors. In fact, clubs like Numancia and Real Valladolid wanted to sign him during January but Athletic decided to keep him at Bilbao Athletic.
Meanwhile, the exciting Lezama graduate has started to catch the eye of other clubs in the area. According to a report from Javier Beltran of AS, both Real Sociedad and Eibar are monitoring the situation closely and would love to sign López who they also see as having a bright future. His strength, ability to win possession, and knack for joining attacks show that he has every trait needed to succeed at the highest level. At this point it seems like a case of when, not if.
The only big issue that could stand in López’s way is Athletic’s pursuit of PSG’s Yuri Berchiche. The 28-year-old is widely regarded as the best Basque left-back in football and could be available this summer with the Parisians needing to sell players to be in compliance with Financial Fair Play. If Berchiche is brought to the San Mamés it would be a huge obstacle for López to overcome, especially considering that he is now at the age where he is knocking on the door of the first team. As mentioned above, other clubs would love to sign Andoni López, but for now Athletic have every intention of keeping him at the club. This summer will be the most important one of his career to date and he will be given every chance to convince Berizzo.
