Leganés Hoping For A Summer Reunion With Athletic Club Goalkeeper Iago Herrerín
Athletic Club are facing a major problem this summer with their goalkeeper situation. On one hand they are extremely blessed to have three great options and a world class starter in Kepa Arrizabalaga, but on the other there is just no way to keep everyone happy. Ever since Iago Herrerín spoke openly about the fact that he does not want to be a backup again next season, the Lions have been in a precarious position. Starlet Alex Remiro has now come out to say the same thing and Athletic must figure out how to best handle the situation.
Herrerín took it a step further when he admitted that he wants to talk to the club and discuss his options, but did say that he will stay if that is what the club wants and he will fight for his place like he’s always done. However, he also revealed that he has been contacted by “seven or eight” clubs who are interested in signing him this summer which may have turned his head. Now one of those clubs has come to light and it isn’t a surprising name.
According to a report from El Desmarque Bizkaia, Leganés are hoping to sign Iago Herrerín this summer and have already contacted him to make their interest known. The 30-year-old spent the second half of the 2016/2017 season on loan with Leganés where he finally got to experience life as a starting keeper and that has been in the back of his mind ever since. The club are said to be in the market for a proven keeper and their familiarity with Herrerín is a major selling point.
When Herrerín revealed that a handful of teams had already contacted him, everyone pretty much assumed that Leganés were one of them. The club has been flirting with Herrerín ever since is loan move and he still speaks fondly of the team where he enjoyed playing every week. In the end, it will be up to new manager Eduardo Berizzo to figure out the situation, but Herrerín has stated on several occasions that he loves Athletic dearly and will accept whatever the club decides to do, understanding that he is still under contract through 2021.
