Athletic Club Officially Announce The Signing Of Dani García
After weeks of reports linking Dani García with a move to Athletic Club, the deal is finally official. The Basque giants announced on Sunday that they had reached an agreement with the 28-year-old who has signed a contract through 2022 that contains a release clause of €70 million. His presentation will take place on Monday at 12:00. With his contract with Eibar running out, García had to make a difficult career decision. Athletic had reached out to the midfielder to make him aware of their interest and he ultimately decided to refuse a renewal with Eibar and make the switch to the San Mamés this summer.
Dani García recently gave a press conference in order to publicly say goodbye to Eibar and the fans. He joined the club in 2012 and helped lead them from Spain’s third tier all the way to the Primera. Despite being so young, he acted as the team captain and appeared in over 220 games for the Armeros before deciding to take on a new challenge. His Eibar teammate, Ander Capa, has also made the move to the San Mamés after he was purchased by Athletic last summer, but was allowed to stay at Eibar for the season. The two are living legends of Ipurua. After the announcement, García said on social media “So happy to belong to this great club! Ready to start now!”
If Dani García is able to perform at the same level for Athletic that he has for Eibar he will be a massive addition to the team. Over the last few years he has become one of the best in La Liga at his position and is only getting better. His leadership, defensive contributions, and ability to dictate play in the center of the field will be a welcomed sight at Athletic after the midfield struggled to control games last season under Kuko Ziganda.
Despite already signing three new players, Athletic Club may just be getting started with their transfer plans. The Basque giants are still targeting a move for Newcastle’s Mikel Merino, while also keeping an eye on Ander Herrera who they know will be extremely difficult to sign. PSG left-back Yuri Berchiche and Osasuna winger Kike Barja are also targets this summer for the Lions who are looking to bounce back from a disappointing season.
