Preseason Training Will Begin on 9 July For Athletic Club Players
The nightmare season is finally in the rear-view mirror for Athletic fans and Eduardo Berizzo is officially the new manager. This summer will be an interesting time for the club who will be looking to bring in several new faces in order to inject more quality and competition into the team in hopes of turning things around and getting back on the winning track. The new La Liga season is set to begin on 18 August and reports already claim that Athletic have set a date to begin their preseason training.
According to DEIA, Athletic players will report back to the Lezama training facilities on 9 July to begin preseason training under manager Eduardo Berizzo. Without the Lions competing in Europe, the summer sessions will serve to prepare the team for the league campaign in which they will be aiming to return to the international scene. Kepa Arrizabalaga will not be in attendance at first due to his commitment to the Spain National Team in this year’s World Cup, while Yeray, Unai Nuñez, and Iñaki Williams may also be given extended leave since they have been practicing with La Roja as alternates.
Bilbao Athletic’s Gorka Guruzeta, Iñigo Vicente, and Andoni López are all expected to train with the first team this summer and they could potentially be joined by others from the reserve team if Berizzo makes that decision. As usual, Athletic will be traveling abroad at some point to train and play friendly matches, but the destination and details have not yet been decided. Berizzo’s team will consist of at least 30 players, counting those from the reserves, and he will have to make some difficult decisions to trim the squad. At the same time the Basque giants are still pushing to sign Newcastle’s Mikel Merino, and potentially others, and hope to have deals completed as soon as possible.
