Athletic Club Officially Announce Eduardo Berizzo As The New Manager
The wait is finally over. After an extremely disappointing campaign under Kuko Ziganda, it became clear that there was going to be a change of manager at Athletic Club when the season came to an end. Over the past few months reports repeatedly tipped Eduardo Berizzo as the favorite to land the job and it didn’t take long for the two sides to begin contract negotiations. The Argentine did not want to sign a deal while Ziganda was still in charge, out of respect, but after President Josu Urrutia officially announced that Ziganda would not continue after the season ended it opened the door to speed up talks. The club reached agreement with Berizzo a few weeks ago and fans have been anxiously awaiting the announcement ever since.
On Thursday, Athletic officially announced that Eduardo Berizzo has been hired as the new manager of the club and his presentation will take place at 18:30. The Argentine has signed a one-year contract through 2019 and there is belief that it also contains a clause that will see his deal automatically extended for an additional season if Athletic qualifies for Europe.. Berizzo has already been given a complete report on Lezama and has been watching first team and youth matches in preparation for the preseason. He has also been in regular contact with Athletic regarding transfer plans for the summer.
Berizzo will be brining several coaching staff members with him such as his right-hand man Ernesto Marucci. He will also be accompanied by technical assistant Roberto Bonano, physical trainer Pablo Fernandez, goalkeeping coach Carlos Kisluk, and assistant Mariano Uglessich who joined Berizzo’s staff at Sevilla
Berizzo is a proven manager in La Liga after a very successful three-year spell at Celta de Vigo where he became a well-known name in European football. Last summer he was the only candidate in contention with Ziganda to take over at Athletic but, after being passed over for the job, decided to accept an offer from Sevilla. After being diagnosed with cancer the team’s performances began to suffer and he was relieved of his duties in December. It was then that Athletic began to take a serious look at hiring the 48-year-old.
Toto is known for his immense knowledge and understanding of the game as well as playing a high-intensity, pressing style of football. He has always been successful at getting the best out of players and has a prowess for developing young talent. Being a disciple of Marcelo Bielsa, Athletic fans are hopeful that he will be able to bring back the passionate and beautiful football that has graced the San Mamés in recent years. The Lions are looking to get back to their winning ways and believe that Eduardo Berizzo is the manager that can make that happen.
