Athletic Club will add two new players to Lezama next season (Optimus)

Athletic are already preparing for next season with the club needing to make some key decisions about the reserve team and feeder club CD Basconia. On Tuesday the Basque giants announced that 11 Bilbao Athletic players were leaving this summer which left several holes in the squad. The following day Athletic gave some clarity on next season’s rosters after announcing that six players from CD Basconia have been promoted, with three others set to spend the preseason with the reserve team.

Christophe Atangana, Javier Murua, Adrián Celador, Antonio Salado, Jon Morcillo and Andoni Tascón have all been officially promoted to Bilbao Athletic and goalkeeper Unai Etxebarria, who spent last season on loan with SD Leioa, will return to the team to compete for his place. At the same time Julen Bernaola, Iker Amorrortu, and Oier Zarraga will get to spend the preseason training with Bilbao Athletic and could potentially earn a spot in the team.

CD Basconia will be undergoing some major changes this summer after a difficult season. Manager Ander Alaña’s team was battling against the bottom of the table for the majority of the year but was able to lead the team to a 15th place finish, having earned 43 points from 38 matches. Along with the six players that have now been promoted, Basconia are also losing Gorka Garai, Alejandro Larrayoz, and Iñigo Sukia after the club announced that they are leaving this summer.

There is still plenty of squad news yet to come for Basconia who will likely see a handful of players join the team from Juvenil A. Starlets like Unai Vencedor, Oihan Sancet, Asier Córdoba, Jon Cabo, Aritz De Miguel, and Ruben Azcona stand out as players who are in line for possible promotion to the feeder club. There is always a chance of players joining from other clubs, but at this time none have been announced. Regardless, Bilbao Athletic and CD Basconia will both have new faces next season as Lezama graduates continue to pursue their dream of reaching the first team and playing at the San Mamés
