Athletic Club Continue To Pursue Yuri Berchiche Despite Signing Cristian Ganea

Will Yuri Berchiche be available this summer? (PSG)

Athletic Club are coming off of one of the worst seasons in the team’s history and President Josu Urrutia has every intention of turning things around this summer. Eduardo Berizzo is set to be named as the new manager in the coming days and the club has already been busy addition new talent to the squad with more arrivals on the agenda. A few weeks ago it was reported that Athletic were in talks with PSG to sign left-back Yuri Berchiche and, despite having just acquired Cristian Ganea, that continues to be the case.

According to a new report from DEIA, Athletic are still very much in pursuit of Berchiche as the club seeks to give Berizzo the best possible squad for the upcoming season. Recent talks with PSG have seen the Parisians demand a fee of €30 million for the 28-year-old, which is a figure that the Basque do not plan on matching. Athletic are hoping to negotiate the price down, but understand that they aren’t the only ones interested with Atletico Madrid also monitoring the defender.

At this point Berchiche’s future is completely in the hands of PSG’s new manager Thomas Tuchel. If the German counts on him in the team for next season then it would be nearly impossible to secure a transfers. However, reports in France claim that Tuchel has already made a list of players that can leave during the window and Berchiche’s name seems to be on it. If that is the case Athletic’s pursuit will be a realistic endeavor this summer if they can bring the asking price down to a more palatable figure.

If Athletic do find a way to bring Yuri Berchiche to the San Mamés it would leave the club with three left-backs and a difficult decision to make. That being said, during President Urrutia’s presentation of Cristian Ganea he seemed to highlight the player’s offensive capabilities more so than his defensive side. The Romanian could potentially function in a more attacking role if needed which could help the situation. Regardless, Berchiche is arguably the best Basque left-back in football right now and if Athletic can sign him then it really doesn’t matter who is already in the squad. For now they are serious about their pursuit of the 28-year-old but only time will tell if they can pull off the transfer.
