Eduardo Berizzo To Be Announced As The New Athletic Club Manager On Thursday
The Eduardo Berizzo era at Athletic Club is about to begin. In fact, it has already started in a way. The Argentine has already been studying the team and Lezama over the past few months in preparation for the preseason and has even been discussing potential transfers with the club. Still, he has yet to be officially announced as the new manager and that has fans becoming impatient. However, it finally looks as though the waiting is over.
Basque source EiTB have reported that Eduardo Berizzo is scheduled to arrive in Bilbao on Thursday, where he will sign his contract with Athletic Club and be announced as the new manager. The 48-year-old has already agreed to a one-year contract with the Basque giants that also contains a clause that will automatically extend the deal for an additional year if he is able to lead the Lions back to European qualification. Seeing a high-profile manager put pen to paper on such a short contract may seem odd, but it is necessary due to the fact that Athletic will be holding Presidential elections next summer.
As expected Berizzo will be bringing a lot of his own staff to Athletic, including his right-hand man Ernesto Marucci. He will also be accompanied by technical assistant Roberto Bonano, physical trainer Pablo Fernandez, goalkeeping coach Carlos Kisluk, and assistant Mariano Uglessich who joined Berizzo’s staff at Sevilla. Despite having several other suitors over the past few months, Berizzo has been solely devoted to taking over at Athletic and is ready to get to work.
Fans will be excited to finally see the Argentine announced as the new manager, but his arrival will also bring with it lofty expectations. Berizzo played under former Athletic manager Marcelo Bielsa and later joined his coaching staff. He is every bit a Bielsa disciple and his aggressive and intense style of play reflects that. Athleticzales are hoping that Berizzo can replicate the same success and bring winning and beautiful football back to the San Mamés.
