Athletic Club Will Reportedly Offer Unai López A Contract Renewal This Summer
When Unai López joined Lezama from Real Sociedad back in 2011 the move was viewed with understandable excitement from Athletic fans. The young midfielder was one of the best players in his age group and had shown immense promise and potential of a wonderful career ahead. Once he joined Lezama he continued to play at a high level as he climbed the youth ranks and was eventually promoted to Bilbao Athletic in 2013. In response to losing Ander Herrera in the summer of 2014, López was promoted to the first team but struggled to hold up against La Liga competition.
The following year, after Bilbao Athletic earned promotion to the Segunda, López was sent back to the reserves where he looked more comfortable and once again showed flashes of something special. The next year he joined Leganés on loan in the Primera and failed to establish himself in the team, although he was still extremely young at the time. Worry began to set in that the midfielder was not going to be able to realize his potential, but all of that seems to have changed this season while on loan at Rayo Vallecano. This year he was one of the best midfielders in the league and helped lead the club to promotion. Still only 22-years-old it now looks like López is ready to take the next step in his career.
According to sources close to the club, Athletic have already made it clear to López that they intend to offer him a contract renewal this summer with his current deal set to expire after the upcoming season. The Lezama product has always been outspoken about his desire to succeed at Athletic and the belief is that an agreement would be reached with relative ease. For the time being he is still on loan at Rayo Vallecano so talks will likely not start until he returns at the end of the season.
Unai López will be given the chance to fight for his place in the first team this summer after this season’s successful spell at Rayo. He has shown the ability to play at a high level and do everything that is asked of a Primera midfielder, but it will ultimately come down to the decision of the new manager. There will be plenty of competition in the squad but if the 22-year-old isn’t able to convince then all signs point to him returning to Rayo on loan in order to play regular minutes in the top flight and continue his development. Regardless of what happens, Unai López is showing signs that he can play at the San Mamés and that should have fans and the club excited about the future.
In addition, Alex Remiro is also expected to sign a contract renewal this summer. The 23-year-old is in his final year and is finishing up an extraordinary season on loan with Huesca where he stood out as the best keeper in the Segunda. The club have already made an offer to the Lezama product and it will be up to him to decide whether or not to sign the deal. If he does, there is a very good chance that he could continue with Huesca on loan next season in the Primera.
