Athletic Club Officially Present New Signing Ander Capa
Due to Athletic Club’s Basque-only policy the team has a very limited pool of players to draw from when it comes to transfers. Going into last summer the team had gone two years without signing a player from outside the club with Raúl García being the last addition in August of 2015. That all changed when Athletic announced the signing of Eibar’s Ander Capa on the first day of September in 2017. The Lions paid €3 million to secure the transfer with Capa set to join the team in the following summer. One year later Ander Capa is officially an Athletic Club player.
On Friday Athletic Club officially presented Ander Capa as the newest signing at the José Iragorri press room at the San Mamés. The 26-year-old has signed a four-year contract, until 2022, that also contains a €50 million release clause. After spending three years at Lezama between 2002-2005, this is a homecoming that Capa said he could not pass up. When he heard that Athletic were interested last summer he told his agent that he didn’t even want to hear offers from other clubs. He was understandably excited about returning to his boyhood club and had the following to say in his press conference.
“The first thing I want to do is thank President Urruta and his administration for the opportunity to come back to my home, my club, my Athletic. Aupa Athletic! I am very excited to have taken this step and this opportunity is very important to me. I have been playing my best and working hard to be prepared and to leave Eibar the right way. It has not been the best season for Athletic but I’m sure the next one will be exciting. I am more comfortable at right-back, but I can also play on the wing. I started as a winger at Lezama, but now I think I’m better at the back. I know there is competing at my position, but I am coming with the goal of winning a place in the starting lineup. I hope to grow and give my best. It was a dream to come back home and I’m very excited to be back at Athletic Club.”
Capa returns to Athletic after 13 years at Eibar, the last six of which were spent with the first team. He made over 200 appearances for the Armeros and played a crucial role in the club’s ascent from the Segunda B to the Primera where he has established himself as one of the best right-backs in the league. His addition to the squad will create plenty of competition at Athletic Club while also giving the team important quality and versatility. Capa is excited to play at the San Mamés, which has been a dream of his since he was a child, and he will officially join his teammates when preseason training begins later this summer.
