Yeray: We Want To Bring Back The Illusion Of The San Mamés
The nightmare season is finally over for Athletic Club. After an extremely disappointing campaign under Kuko Ziganda there are going to be major chances at the club and it all begins with the coach. Ziganda will not continue as the manager this summer and will be replaced by Eduardo Berizzo who will likely be announced in the coming days. That won’t be the only change though, as the squad is also set to be overhauled in order to get the team back on track. Several players have been linked with moves to the San Mamés, but defender Yeray recently spoke with Radio Bilbao and said that the players have no idea who will coming this summer.
“No one has a clue who is coming. Of course, you hear names but we have no idea, but we are very excited. We are ready to start the preseason and play games. The new manager? I can’t tell you anything, we really have no idea who it is. It has been a very bad season with many ups and downs, more failures than successes, but it is also something useful to learn from. Everyone made their own mistakes and next year we can turn it around. We want to bring back the illusion of the San Mamés, to get more wins, especially at home, and try to compete for a place in Europe.”
Yeray admitted that the team did not live up to the expectations they had when the season started and said that they want to recover the love of the fans in the next campaign. Athletic always have the goal of fighting for European qualification and fell well short of that target under Ziganda. Despite being close to the relegation zone of the table, the defender said that the team was able to maintain their composure and they never felt like they were in danger of falling out of the Primera.
“We have to recover that love from the fans and achieve those triumphs that didn’t come this year. Our goal is always to fight for a place in Europe which, in recent years, we found success. We are the ones who suffered those defeats, but the team has always been united and we knew how to behave at all times. We are a family and we all take responsibility. When we saw ourselves near the relegation zone I think we managed to maintain our composure and take the points we needed to climb higher up the table. Training with the World Cup squad as a reserve? Any one would like to be in that situation so for us it is a prize.”
So far there are three confirmed additions to the Athletic squad this summer. Ander Capa, Dani Garcia, and Cristian Ganea will all be making the switch to the San Mamés, but the Lions have plans to bring in even more talent to overhaul the roster. The Basques are said to be targeting Mikel Merino, Ander Herrera, Kike Barja, and Yuri Berchiche with President Josu Urrutia willing to pay to make the signings happen. At the same time, several current players will be fighting for their place this summer and it will be up to the new manager to decide who will have a role in the team moving forward.
