Leganés Interested In Signing Athletic Club Forward Sabin Merino
After an extremely disappointing season under Kuko Ziganda, Athletic Club will undergo major changes this summer. Eduardo Berizzo will be named as the new manager any day now and it will be up to him to put together the team that will hopefully right the ship during the next campaign. As things stand right now the squad is overbooked, especially considering that the Basques won’t be competing in Europe, which means that some players will be leaving the San Mamés during the upcoming transfer window. Enric Saborit and Kike Sola are already confirmed exits, but others will follow.
According to a recent report from Nika Cuenca of Fiebre Rojiblanco, Leganés have already shown interest in signing Athletic Club forward Sabin Merino and are monitoring his situation closely. In addition, a few clubs who are in contention for promotion to the Primera are said to be watching the 26-year-old, specifically Real Zaragoza and Numancia.
Sabin Merino’s future is still very much up in the air at this point. After featuring prominently in his debut season with the first team in 2015/2016, during which he scored seven goals, Merino’s playing time has been in constant decline. In fact, the 26-year-old has only scored one goal in the last two years and barely saw the field under Kuko Ziganda. With Aritz Aduriz and Iñaki Williams standing in his way at striker, and plenty of other options on the wing, Merino is facing an uphill battle this summer to convince the new manager that he deserves a place in the team. He currently has one year left on his contract so if he were to leave it could be on loan or a permanent move with Athletic retaining a buy-back option on the forward.
Apart from Merino there could be several other players set to leave Athletic this summer. With Dani Garcia coming in, and the possible signing of Mikel Merino, some difficult decisions will have to be made about the midfielders in the squad. Mikel San José, Ander Iturraspe, Mikel Vesga, and Mikel Rico will all be in a battle to retain their place in the team while returning loanee Unai López is hoping to carve out his own path to stay at the San Mamés. Major changes are coming this summer and that should have fans excited about next season.
