Kike Sola Says Goodbye To Athletic Club

Kike Sola’s career at Athletic Club didn’t go as planned. He joined Lezama in 1998 when he was just 11 years old and stayed for five years before making the move to Osasuna. In 2013 he was signed by Athletic with hopes of becoming a regular at the San Mamés but he was unable to carve out a role in the squad and was sent on loan three times where he failed to establish himself. With his contract expiring this summer, the Lions officially announced on Tuesday that Kike Sola would be leaving the club and he has since responded through social media with a letter thanking the club and the fans for his time in Bilbao.

“I came to Athletic as an 11-year-old boy and I’m leaving as a 32-year-old having learned the values that I now represent. I’m thankful for everything because I’m not just leaving a team, I’m leaving much more like the friendships I will have for the rest of my life. Thank you to the club, the fans, and all the employees and countless people that I have met along the way. Eskerrik Asko!”

Kike Sola won’t be the only player leaving the club this summer. Athletic also announced that left-back Enric Saborit will be making his exit after spending three seasons with the first team squad. Saborit joined Lezama in 2008 and will now look for a new home to continue his footballing career. On the other hand, Sola will have a very difficult decision to make. To this point he has not received interest from Primera clubs and will likely have to settle for a move to the Segunda if he does not want to retire this summer.

There are going to be major changes in the team this summer after what was a disappointing season under Kuko Ziganda. Eduardo Berizzo is expected to be announced as the new manager by the end of the week and it will be up to the Argentine to build the squad for the upcoming campaign. Right now there are too many players on the roster, especially in midfield, so everyone will be competing for their places during the preseason. Athletic Club President Josu Urrutia realizes that there needs to be some major changes and that is exactly what he is planning to do in the coming months.
