Alex Remiro Will Reportedly Sign Contract Extension With Athletic Club
Alex Remiro’s future has been a major point of conversation over the last few months. The Lezama product is entering the final year of his contract with Athletic who offered him an extension several weeks ago. The keeper asked for time to think about the renewal because he is aware that he is not going to be overtaking Kepa Arrizabalaga as the starter. Iago Herrerín also poses an obstacle for the 23-year-old to overcome. Now, it appears as though Remiro has made a decision.
According to several reports in the Basque Country, Alex Remiro has agreed to a contract renewal and will put pen to paper sometime soon. The new contract is expected to run through 2022 and will see the keeper sent on loan to a club in the Primera for the upcoming season. It is likely that he will simply stay with Huesca who he helped lead to promotion this season. He even hinted at the possibility in a recent interview with Cadena Cope.
“Would I like to stay with Huesca? Yes, I believe the best thing for me is to play here again next season. But in the end it will all depend on what Athletic want to do with me. I have been happy at Huesca this year and have grown a lot so let’s see what happens.”
Remiro proved himself to be one of the best players in the Segunda this season and he is clearly ready to take the next step to the Primera. His growth makes him an exciting prospect for Athletic who did not want to lose him to another club. Signing Remiro to an extension while also finding a way for him to play regular minutes in La Liga is great for everyone involved.
