Raúl García Trains At Lezama 15 Days After Having Heart Surgery
Raúl García’s season ended 15 days ago when it was announced that the 31-year-old was undergoing a procedure to correct a mild heart arrhythmia that he had been dealing with since the summer of 2016. Due to the nature of the surgery it was clear that he would not be able to return to the field in the final weeks of the season and was released the following day to begin his recovery process. Everyone around the situation had no question that the midfielder would be back on the field quickly and, being the competition that he is, it didn’t take long at all.
On Tuesday Athletic Club conducted their final training session of the season ahead of Wednesday’s friendly against Santutxu. Not only was Raúl García in attendance, but he was seen running with trainer Xavi Clemente while also doing light work with the ball. Rulo, as he is affectioned known by Athletic fans, has never been the type of player that can take things easy or relax. From the moment he was released from the hospital he has been working hard to return and has even visited Lezama a few times to be closer to his teammates.
The final training session of the season also saw the return of Mikel Rico who had missed the last few weeks with a muscle injury. Kike Sola and Mikel Balenziaga were both still unable to practice due to respective muscle injuries, while Iñaki Williams also didn’t train. Iago Herrerín and Iñigo Córdoba both missed parts of training but neither looked to be injured or in any discomfort. The squad as a whole were in good spirits as the season is almost finished and summer vacations will seen begin.
Athletic will compete in their last game of the year on Wednesday in a friendly against local Basque club Santutxu. At this point it is uncertain which players will feature with Bilbao Athletic still competing in the promotional playoffs and their players unavailable for the friendly. Wednesday will also bring the unveiling of Athletic’s new kits for the upcoming season and some sources suggested that the team may wear them in the game against Santutxu.
