Iñaki Williams, Yeray, And Unai Nuñez Named As Alternates For Spain’s World Cup Squad
Now that the club football seasons is coming to a close all the focus will immediately switch to this summer’s World Cup which will be held in Russia. A few days ago Spain manager Julen Lopetegui announced his 23-man squad which included Athletic Club goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Kepa’s inclusion wasn’t a surprise to anyone as he has featured as the backup to David De Gea for some time now. On Tuesday Lopetegui named seven more footballers who would train with the team as alternates. This list included three more Athletic players.
Yeray, Iñaki Williams, and Unai Nuñez have all been named as alternates for the World Cup squad, along with Mikel Oyarzabal, Jesús Vallejo, Carlos Soler, and Rodrigo Hernández. These players will join training sessions starting on Monday at 18:00 at Las Rozas. Along with Kepa Arrizabalaga, Athletic now have four players in connection with this summer’s World Cup.
Iñaki Williams is no stranger to the National Team. After featuring extensively for the U21 side, he was name as an alternate for EURO 2016 under manager Vicente Del Basque. The Lezama product made his debut with the Selection in a 3-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina when he was brought on as a substitute for Marco Asensio who was also making his debut. Yeray and Unai Nuñez have yet to make their National Team debuts, but have featured for the U21 team.
Many Athletic fans have voiced their confusion over the fact that Iñigo Martinez was not at least named as an alternative. Since joining Athletic in January he has been one of the standout center-backs in La Liga and many believed that he had a chance to be named in the 23-man squad going to Russia. As is usually the case, the manager has only called up young players for the alternate list in order for them to get familiar and acclimated to being around the main squad and in training sessions. This will be a wonderful experience for the three Lions who could one day become important players in the National Team.
