Enric Saborit And Kike Sola Officially Leave Athletic Club

The writing has been on the wall for quite some time now for Athletic Club players Enric Saborit and Kike Sola. With both set to see their contracts expire this summer the club did not approach them with renewal offers and it became clear that their time at the San Mamés was drawing to an end. On Tuesday Athletic officially announced that Saborit and Sola would be leaving the club after choosing now to extend their expiring contracts and thanked them for their service to the club over the last few years.

Saborit leaves after having joined Lezama when he was 16 years old. He worked his way to Bilbao Athletic where he began to make a name for himself before being called up to the first team under Ernesto Valverde back in 2013. The left-back has always played a minor role in the team, usually as the backup to Mikel Balenziaga, but has also seen minutes in a more attacking role. With Cristian Ganea joining the team this summer, and pressure from Lezama starlet Andoni López, Saborit will now be leaving the San Mamés.

Kike Sola’s story is an unfortunate one. He joined Lezama 1998 and attended the academy for five years before eventually leaving to join Osasuna. After some time he became one of the focal points of Osasuna’s attack and scored nine goals in the 2012/2013 season which attracted the eyes of Athletic who purchased him in the summer. Despite being at Athletic for five years Sola has rarely seen the field and has left on loan three times. He will now seek a new home where he can play regular minutes and continue his footballing career.

These two likely won’t be the only players to leave Athletic this summer. The squad is going to face major changes in the summer and is already overbooked, especially in the midfield. With Ander Capa, Cristian Ganea, and Dani Garcia all coming to the San Mamés the team will have to be trimmed down. The Lions are also targeting moves for Mikel Merino, Ander Herrera, Kike Barja, and Yuri Berchiche. Eduardo Berizzo is expected to be announced as the new manager by the end of the week and it will be up to him to build the squad for the upcoming season.
