Athletic Club 0-1 Espanyol: Postgame Player Comments

Athletic Club played their final match of the year on Sunday at the San Mamés in what turned out to be a 1-0 loss to Espanyol. The visitors scored an early goal from a corner kick and the Basques struggled the entire game to find the equalizer. It was a fitting end to what has been an extremely disappointing season. After the game was over Yeray and Kepa Arrizabalaga both spoke with AthleticTV and admitted that it has been a hard year and that all they can do at this point is look forward to next season. Here is what they had to say:

Yeray is ready to look forward to next season (AthleticTV)

“It has been a complicated season, with many defeats. We have been near the bottom of the table and it has not been pleasant for us. If I can find any positive in this season it’s that I was able to return to the field, but I’m not happy with the results and how we finished. We have faced a lot of adversity in every game and we hope to turn it around next year.”

Kepa Arrizabalaga

“It was another game similar to the others we have played at home, if you take out the win over Betis. We didn’t mark well on the corner and they scored the first goal and we couldn’t turn the game around. We have to learn for next year. This has been a complicated year and neither the fans nor we are happy. Luckily, or unfortunately, it is over and we can rest and start to look forward to next year. At the beginning of the season the goal was to qualify for Europe, but all year long we have off that spot in the table. In March and April we were fighting to get back into it, but it didn’t happen. We are the first ones to acknowledge that it was a bad year and it hasn’t been easy. We can only reflect on it, learn from it, and look forward to next year.”
