Julen Guerrero Thinks The Athletic Club Squad Needs A Renovation
This summer there will be major changes taking place at Athletic Club. After an extremely disappointing season under Kuko Ziganda, the Lions will be hiring a new manager and there is bound to be a lot of turnover in the squad. Club legend Julen Guerrero was recently asked in an interview about his opinions on the upcoming changes and he was not shy about the fact that he thinks it is time to breathe some new life into the team, whether it be by new signings or promoting some younger players from Lezama.
“The season has not been good and not what we all expected. We will finish this weekend with bitterness after not being able to fight for a place in Europe or higher. A club like Athletic has to have their sights set on improving that, but there are always other positive things like the young players who have made their debuts and settled into the first team. All of the new signing that are coming are positive additions. Athletic has to fight to bring in the best they can. I think the squad needs a bit of renovation after quite a few years of not signing anyone. Maybe it’s time to refresh the team a little bit with signings or with kids coming from the youth system.
Guerrero clearly felt sympathetic for Kuko Ziganda who, despite living out his dream of coaching Athletic, was unable to get positive results. The club legend also believes that other circumstances played into the performances this year, but refused to discuss reports suggesting that Eduardo Berizzo will become the new manager. At the end of the day, Guerrero wants to see Athletic regularly competing in Europe which he believes is the biggest success.
“It is really unfortunate for him after waiting so long for that opportunity, what I imagine has been his lifelong dream. I am convinced that has tried to give everything during this season. Things haven’t gone well and there are also other circumstances. Major players were injured, loss of form, the issue with Kepa, Laporte left in the winger market…many circumstances contributed to the team not having consistency. I don’t know if he will be able to return to Athletic in the future. He will continue his career and I wish him all the luck wherever he goes next. Berizzo? Let’s wait and see if it is confirmed. There is a lot of talk about him, but until he shows up or signs there is still a lot that can happen. Whoever comes in isn’t going to be leading an Athletic carrying the weight of European competition. The new manager will be able to work with peace and patience in that aspect.”
Athletic Club have already sealed the signings of Ander Capa, Cristian Ganea, and Dani Garcia who will all join this summer. At the same time the Basques have their eyes on Mikel Merino, Ander Herrera, Kike Barja, and Yuri Berchiche as they seek to add more quality into the team. As predicted by Guerrero, a few young stars will get the chance to spend the preseason with the first team with Gorka Guruzeta, Andoni López, and Iñigo Vicente all slated to do so at this point. Big changes are coming this offseason and that should fill fans with excitement.
