Athletic Club Facing Competition To Sign Yuri Berchiche This Summer

This summer the Athletic Club squad will be getting a much-needed overhaul. Already three new signings will be joining the team – Ander Capa, Dani Garcia, and Cristian Ganea – with more on the way. Eduardo Berizzo, who will likely be announced as the new manager next week, has been discussing possible transfers with the club over the past several weeks and it was recently reported that Athletic had started negotiations with PSG in an attempt to sign Yuri Berchiche. The 28-year-old is widely viewed as the best Basque left-back in football, so it isn’t surprising that other clubs are also showing interest.

Athletic aren’t the only ones chasing Yuri Berchiche (PSG)

According to a recent report from Javier Beltran of AS, three other European clubs are looking to sign Berchiche this summer which could make things extremely difficult for Athletic. One of these clubs is Atletico Madrid who are in the market for a new left-back. The other two are only known as a mid-table English side and a team from Germany that will be playing in Europe next season. If the Basque giants really want to bring Berchiche to the San Mamés they will have to step up their pursuit.

Initial reports suggested that PSG had requested a fee of €30 million for Berchiche. Athletic balked at this price tag and have been trying to negotiate it lower. The fact that the French league doesn’t have release clauses makes things even more difficult because there isn’t a set value to work off of. That being the case, PSG hold all the cards because they don’t need to sell the left-back at this point due to the fact that he is still under contract until 2021. Sources claim that the Lions are very serious about signing Berchiche and have made him a top target this summer, but for that to happen they will likely have to overpay to secure the transfer.

At the end of the day the decision will ultimately come down to PSG. New manager Thomas Tuchel hasn’t even assessed the squad yet, although reports in France suggest that Berchiche could definitely be made available for the right price. At the same time, the 28-year-old is happy in Paris and hasn’t given anyone the belief that he wants to leave. Sources claim that if he was to move this summer he would be open to a return to Athletic, where he spent time at Lezama, but there would be plenty of other suitors as well. For right now Berchiche’s future is still very much a mystery, but Athletic Club have already established dialogue with PSG and are keeping a close eye on the situation.
