Mikel Vesga will likely be leaving Athletic Club this summer. With Dani Garcia, and possibly Mikel Merino, coming to the San Mamés there is an overbooking in midfield and that means that departures will happen. Vesga started the season as a prominent figure in the lineup, but has gone on to only feature 15 times season and hasn’t even seen the field in over two months. The 25-year-old is currently at the bottom of the pecking order and has already been surveying potential landing spots for this summer as he is anticipating an exit.
A report from Pako Ruiz of DEIA claims that several clubs have already contacted Athletic regarding Vesga’s availability. Some of those interested are Primera clubs, while others are currently in contention to earn promotion to the top flight. In the end, his future will be decided by the new manager who will be looking to build the strongest squad during the preseason. If Vesga does leave, it could be on a loan or the Lions could allow him to make a permanent move elsewhere.
Vesga played the best football of his career last season while he was on loan at Sporting Gijon who were in the Primera at the time. The midfielder showed the ability to create chances behind the forwards, win back possession, and be a defensive force when needed. He had shown those same qualities while playing for Bilbao Athletic but for whatever reason he just hasn’t been able to duplicate the same success with Athletic. Perhaps the reason has been because of the system he is playing in, but he was coached by Kuko Ziganda in the reserves so that makes things even more curious.
This summer will be a time of immense change at Athletic. Eduardo Berizzo is set to become the new manager and the squad will be getting an overhaul. Ander Capa and Cristian Ganea are arrivals that have already been confirmed and it is only a matter of time before the club announces the signing of Dani Garcia. At the same time, the Basques are bent on bringing Mikel Merino to the San Mamés and that is why some players will have to leave. Vesga, Mikel San José, Ander Iturraspe, and Mikel Rico will all have to fight for their places in the team this summer because no one is safe. Once this season finally comes to an end, the real work will begin.
