Athletic Club Expected To Announce Eduardo Berizzo As Manager Next Week
Eduardo Berizzo is one step closer to becoming the new manager of Athletic Club. As it was reported yesterday, the Argentine had a meeting scheduled to take place on Tuesday with the Basques which would serve to make sure everything was still in order before putting pen to paper. The two sides have had a deal in place for a few weeks now but agreed not to make anything official out of respect for Kuko Ziganda who has still been leading the team. After it was announced that Ziganda would be leaving in the summer, Berizzo and Athletic moved forward in order to finalize the agreement.
Tuesday’s meeting went ahead as planned, but Berizzo was not in attendance. He was seen in Vigo having lunch with Celta Vigo Director, Antonio Chaves, whom he still has a good friendship with. Once pictures confirmed that he was in Vigo, Athletic fans began to worry that the Argentine would not be coming to the San Mamés, but there is nothing to worry about. Sources have confirmed that Berizzo has been in Vigo since the weekend where he has been relaxing before taking his new job at Athletic Club. His representatives did meet with Athletic in Bilbao where the two sides went over the contractual details again.
According to a report from EITB, Tuesday’s meeting was focused on the economic aspect of the contract. The Basques have already made their offer to Berizzo and his representatives sat down to go over the numbers again to make sure all was still in order and, potentially, discuss any changes. Both Athletic and Eduardo Berizzo want to finalize an agreement as quickly as possible and Tuesday’s meeting was meant to help make that happen. If everything went according to plan the Argentine will be officially signing his contract in the coming days and will be announced as the new manager next week, after the current season has ended.
Next week will be a critical time period for the Berizzo saga. The goal to this point has always been to close the signing in such a way that the Argentine could be presented quickly after the end of the season. With the Lions playing their last game of the year on Sunday, Berizzo will be announced next week unless there were any issues that arose in Tuesday’s meeting. Over the past month, Berizzo has been studying Lezama and watching games in preparation for the preseason. He has rejected offers from other clubs and has been solely focused on Athletic. Negotiations can weigh heavily on fans, but, unless something changes over the next few days, Eduardo Berizzo will be the new manager of Athletic Club. As they say, the only thing missing is the signature.
