Alex Remiro is in a very interesting position. The Lezama-grown goalkeeper has spent this season on loan with Huesca where he has arguably been the best at his position in the entire Segunda and that has obviously attracted interest. He has already proven that he can become a star and that has led Athletic Club to offer him a contract renewal for four more seasons, but the 23-year-old has asked for time to think about the decision. He knows that Kepa Arrizabalaga is the undisputed started and that Iago Herrerín is still weighing up his future, so Remiro is trying to make the best decision for his career.
The keeper has played a huge role with Huesca this season and the club currently sits 2nd in the table and in prime position to earn promotion. If that happens, Remiro would likely sign the contract renewal and stay on loan with Huesca in the Primera. That is the scenario that everyone is hoping for. That being said, Herrerín is still trying to decide if he wants to sit behind Kepa next season or leave to become a starter somewhere else in La Liga. Herrerín and Remiro are two dominoes that are waiting on the other to fall.
According to a report from Javier Beltran of AS, Espanyol and Girona have both shown interest in signing Remiro and are waiting for him to make a decision on his future. Espanyol keeper Pau López will be leaving for Real Betis this summer and Girona’s Gorka Iraizoz could decide to retire, leaving both clubs to believe that Remiro could take over the starting role at the next level. In addition, a few Segunda clubs who are in contention for promotion are also monitoring the situation, such as Osasuna, Cádiz, and Huesca where Remiro is currently on loan.
Eduardo Berizzo is expected to be named the new manager of Athletic in the coming days and he will have a lot to say on the matter as well. When the preseason begins, Remiro and Herrerín will be directly competing with each other and Berizzo will be watching the battle closely. His opinion could likely sway the decisions of both goalkeepers so it will be a story to watch closely throughout the summer. For now Alex Remiro remains an Athletic player and his contract doesn’t expire until June of 2019. There is a four-year renewal offer on the table and it will be up to the 23-year-old to make the ultimate decision about his future.
