Iñaki Williams wants to become a legend at Athletic Club. The young forward is solely loyal to Basque giants and has worked extremely hard since he was a child to become the best player that he can be. He shattered scoring records at Lezama and earned promotion to the first team back in 2014 where he has become an undisputed starter and fan favorite. Whether playing on the wing or as the center-forward he has all the qualities to cause chaos for opposing defenders, but he has hit a wall at the San Mamés that he struggling to overcome.
The 23-year-old has gone 30 straight matches without scoring a goal at the San Mamés, with his last goal coming in a 3-1 win over Eibar back in December of 2016. Iñaki hasn’t even really played poorly so much as he has just been unlucky. Between striking the crossbar and seeing his shots miraculously saved it almost seems like he is cursed right now. He has managed to score seven league goals away from home this season, but his ineffectiveness at The Cathedral is still concerning.
He will have the opportunity to end the streak on the last day of the season when Athletic will host Espanyol at the San Mamés. There may not be anything left for the Lions to play for at this point other than pride, but there is no reason to believe that he won’t be in the starting lineup for Sunday’s game. Iñaki Williams has always been a very strong individual who doesn’t let things bother him, but with every missed shot it looks like he’s becoming more aware of the fact that the ball just won’t go in the back of the net. The winger has been getting plenty of service in recent games so he should have chances to end the streak against Espanyol and that will probably be in the back of his mind.
Once Sunday’s match at the San Mamés is over, a busy summer will begin. There will be a new manager coming in to replace Kuko Ziganda and several new faces. At the same time the squad will need to be trimmed which could lead to some difficult decisions over the next few months. After an extremely disappointing season, President Josu Urrutia is committed to doing everything in his power to turn things around this offseason and that should have fans very excited about the upcoming campaign.
