Several years ago Iñigo Ruiz De Galarreta was one of the most highly anticipated players coming out of Lezama. The midfielder had all the qualities to become a star at the San Mamés, but two serious knee injuries derailed his Athletic Club career. He spent a few years out on loan with Mirandés, Zaragoza, and Leganés before ultimately being allowed to leave permanently to join Numancia. It was there had Galarreta put his injuries behind him and really started to live up to his potential. After just one incredible season he was purchased by Barcelona B where he played this season.
The 23-year-old has been one of Barcelona B’s most influential players this season, and one of the best in the Segunda at his position. His maturity and ability to control games has been undeniably clear and his statistics back it up as well. Galarreta is earning nearly twice as many interceptions, recoveries, challenges, and tackles per game than than the league average which is eye-catching to say the least. He’s also completing over 80% of his passes and has proven his ability to dictate the pace of play and create chances for his teammates. Over the last two seasons Galarreta has been the real deal and people are starting to take notice.
Athletic fans have been calling for the club to bring back Galarreta for a while, but as of right now there isn’t anything linking him with a return. That being said, he will be free to leave Barcelona this summer. According to a report from Alejandro Segura of Marca, Barcelona B’s imminent relegation will see Galarreta make an exit in order to stay in the Segunda or, perhaps, make the jump to the Primera.
Galaxy, as he is affectionately known in Bilbao, has always been open about his desire to earn a place at Athletic. Even if his boyhood club doesn’t come calling this summer, there is always the chance that he could one day make his return to the San Mamés, especially if he keeps playing at such a high level. Regardless of what happens during the upcoming transfer window, Galarreta has officially put his injuries behind him and is now living up to the expectations he once carried at Lezama. He has proven that he can dominate in the Segunda and it is likely just a matter of time before he gets the opportunity to take the next step in his career.
