Eduardo Berizzo And Athletic Club Have Resumed Negotiations This Week
All signs point to Eduardo Berizzo becoming the new manager at Athletic Club after the current season comes to an end. The Argentine met with the Basques a few weeks ago to finalize negotiations, but both sides agreed not to sign anything out of respect to Kuko Ziganda who is still in charge of the team, but will not keep his job after a poor campaign. Berizzo and Athletic agreed to pick back up negotiations when the season was drawing to a close and that is what has now begun to take place with both parties wanting to reach an agreement as soon as possible.
Fans have understandably been worried about the fact that other clubs have come calling for Berizzo. So far the Argentine has rejected offers from Colo Colo, Flamengo, Universidad de Chile, and the Ecuador National Team. He respectfully told them that he intends to sign with Athletic, but that hasn’t kept other clubs from trying to tempt him away from the San Mamés. It was recently revealed that Nice has been preparing an offer for Berizzo whom they view as their top choice to replace Lucien Favre who is set to take over at Borussia Dortmund.
Basque source ETB are reporting that Berizzo and Athletic have resumed negotiations this week as planned. There are only two games left on the calendar and the two sides are now hoping to reach an agreement very quickly so that Berizzo can take over as soon as the season officially ends. The Argentine has already been given a complete report on Lezama and has been watching games in preparation for the preseason. The fact that Berizzo is already working under the idea that he will be the Athletic manager this summer is definitely a positive sign.
Berizzo is said to really like the idea of coaching at Athletic. He loves the club, the way it is run, the environment of Bilbao, and the focus on youth. Being a disciple of Marcelo Bielsa, fans are hoping that he will bring the same passion and devotion to perfection. The fact that Berizzo’s family still live in Spain is also noted as a reason for his decision to stay in La Liga. There will still be some time before any potential announcements are made but, unless something changes, Eduardo Berizzo will be the next manager of Athletic Club.
