Nice Hoping To Lure Eduardo Berizzo Away From Athletic Club
No matter how Athletic performs in the final two games of the season, manager Kuko Ziganda will not survive the summer. The club has taken a major step backwards during Ziganda’s first year in charge and he will pay for it with his job. The Basque giants have already been in serious talks with Eduardo Berizzo to take over once the current seasons ends and all signs point to that becoming a reality. However, until he signs a contract with Athletic there will still be clubs hoping to lure him away and there is one looking to do just that.
According to a report from RMC Sport, French club Nice are preparing a serious offer in hopes of brining in Berizzo to be their new manager with current boss Lucien Favre set to take over at Borussia Dortmund. The report goes on to say that Peter Bosz is also a major candidate for the job, but that they heavily prefer Berizzo due to the fact that he has played in France and speaks the language. Nice are also still in contention to qualify for the Europa League are are hoping that, along with Berizzo’s familiarity with Ligue 1, will convince him to reject Athletic Club.
Berizzo has already had offers from Colo Colo, Flamengo, Universidad de Chile, and the Ecuador National Team but has politely rejected all of them. He has been in advanced negotiations with Athletic for a few weeks now and it was recently reported that a contract had been drawn up but that the Argentine did not want to sign it until after the current season ends out of respect for Kuko Ziganda who is still leading the team. The fact that Berizzo has told other clubs that he plans to sign with Athletic is definitely good news, but until he officially does there will always be a possibility that he could take another offer.
Sources have said that Berizzo really likes the idea of becoming the manager of Athletic. He loves the club, the focus on youth, the environment of the city, and the way the club is run. In fact, in a recent meeting he was given a complete breakdown of Lezama and has reportedly been watching all of the youth games in preparation for preseason training. Everything to this point suggests that Berizzo is already operating under the idea that he will be the manager this summer. There is plenty for Athletic fans to be excited about, but until Berizzo is announced there will always be worry over the fact that he could change his mind.
