Asier Villalibre Linked With A Move To Join Joseba Etxeberria At Tenerife
It’s easy to forget that Asier Villalibre is still just 20 years old. The young striker made his first team debut back in 2016 and looked promising but was unable to carve out a consistent role in the squad. It was clear that he needed to play regular minutes and was sent on loan to Numancia in May for the final month of the season. Once the summer came he was once again sent on loan to the Segunda, this time joining Real Valladolid. The Lezama product barely saw the field and left to join Lorca in the winter market where things have gone much better for him.
This summer Villalibre will return to Athletic where he will look to challenge for a permanent place in the first team. In a recent interview he said, “I will return with hope and will work as hard as possible to stay. I have to work and improve”. There is certainly a need for more attacking depth in the squad, but there is also a lot of competition. Aritz Aduriz and Iñaki Williams are fixtures in the team, while Sabin Merino is also cable of playing as a striker. Meanwhile, Bilbao Athletic’s Gorka Guruzeta will be spending the preseason with the first team so Villalibre definitely has his work cut out for him.
If he isn’t able to convince the manager to keep him in the team there will definitely be suitors wanting to take him on loan, and one is already lining up. According to reports, Tenerife are monitoring the situation and would like to bring Villalibre to the club during the summer transfer window. If the move were to take place it would see the 20-year-old join Athletic Club legend Joseba Etxeberria who is currently the manager of Tenerife. Etxeberria is said to really love the idea of Villalibre strengthening his squad and being able to coach the starlet.
There is no denying the flashes of brilliance that Asier Villalibre has shown and what he accomplished at Lezama. He has always had all of the qualities needed to become a great striker, but he is still very young and has a lot of development left ahead of him to reach his full potential. Learning under someone like Joseba Etxeberria could be just the thing he needs to take the next step in his career and fight for his place at the San Mamés.
