Garitano: We Depend On Ourselves And I Like That

After a convincing 3-0 win over Osasuna B over the weekend, Bilbao Athletic are just one match away from securing their place in the promotional playoff. Since the turn of the year the Katxorros have arguably been the strongest team in the entire league and they should get the chance to prove that as they compete for a place in the Segunda. After the game manager Gaizka Garitano discussed the great run that his team is on and made his feeling clear that they still have work to do to achieve their goal of fighting for promotion.

“In today’s match we were the superior team. We had to adapt to the pressure and as the game progressed we were in more control. Things changed after we scored the first goal. We are doing very well. Normally with 70 points you are champions, but this league has been very difficult. Right now we still need to win against Tudelano. We are not dropping many points, but neither are the teams above us which makes the table tight. It will be a difficult match, but we depend on ourselves and I like that.”

Bilbao Athletic currently sit fourth in the table which happens to be the last promotional playoff spot. They will control their destiny because as long as they can earn a point against Tudelano this weekend they will seal a fourth place finish. In fact, the Katxorros are only three points off of first place so theoretically they can finish in a much higher place. Luckily, Garitano’s team has won 11 straight games at home (where the game will be played on Sunday) and haven’t lost at Lezama since the very first game of the season.

If Bilbao Athletic do enter the promotional playoff they will have to fend off stiff competition to earn a place in the Segunda next season. Playing in Spain’s second division would give young players the perfect opportunity to test themselves against stronger clubs while not having to leave on loan. Gaizka Garitano’s ultimate goal is to make it the Segunda but, even if the team falls short, this season can still only be defined as a tremendous success.
