Athletic President Josu Urrutia is ready to spare no expense this season as he looks to overhaul the squad and make up for a disappointing season. One player that has come to the head of the transfer target list is Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera who was once a fan favorite at the San Mamés. English media claim that the 28-year-old will be one of the casualties this summer and the Lions are ready to take advantage and have offered Herrera the chance to become one of the highest paid players in the squad if he agrees to return to Bilbao in a few months.
However, if it were up to Herrera he would stay right where he is. According to a report from Nika Cuenca of Fiebre Rojiblanca, Ander Herrera wants to see out his contract with the English club which would have him stay at Old Trafford through next season. After that, the midfielder could elect to move to any number of teams, but his ultimate goal is to retire with his boyhood club Real Zaragoza.
The report goes on to say that Herrera is very happy at Manchester United and is willing to play in any role that they ask of him. At the same time, his wife would like to move back to Spain soon which makes next summer, after his contract expires, the perfect time for the former Athletic star to leave England. As of right now it is still unknown whether or not manager Jose Mourinho does in fact plan on offloading the 28-year-old during the upcoming transfer window, but if he does there will be plenty of suitors. As of right now AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, and Athletic Club are all hoping to sign Herrera.
Athletic Club have made it known that if Ander Herrera is to leave this summer, they will do everything possible to bring him back to the San Mamés. Some reports have gone as far to claim that Herrera would favor a move back to Athletic if he is told that his time in Manchester is over. Due to the fact that he has been able to play a positive role this season, the most likely scenario is that Herrera will continue at Manchester United until next summer when he may be ready to make another career move. Regardless, the Basque giants will not give up hope of signing him and are monitoring the situation very carefully.
