Real Sociedad 3-1 Athletic Club: Postgame Player Comments
The Athletic Club players were understandably upset after Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Real Sociedad in the Basque Derby. Two own-goals from Mikel San José and a defensive error from Iñigo Lekue capped off another disappointing night for the Lions, which also saw Iñigo Martinez make his return to the Anoeta after leaving in January. After the game, Iñaki Williams and Kepa Arrizabalaga spoke to the media and were both in sour moods. Despite the embarrassing loss, they said that all the team can do is move on and get ready for the next game.
“Right now you just want to go home and lock yourself inside. However, there is no time to hang your head. You have to keep your head up and keep working and fighting for good results in the last three games. I don’t think it was fair. We tried to come back into the game and in the second half we had several chances from close distance, but the ball didn’t want to go in. We beat ourselves. But there is no time for regrets. We have to finish the season as strong as possible and we can’t look back.”
“It was a complicated match that went all wrong from the beginning. They didn’t create too many chances but were up 2-0 at the break. They controlled the game well because they felt comfortable playing at home. In the second half we tried to score as soon as possible, but we scored in our gown goal. That third goal was just bad luck. It was a very disappointing result. We had some chances in the second half, but it was complicated. You never like to lose a Derby.
