Athletic Club Reportedly Negotiating With PSG To Sign Yuri Berchiche
After what has been an extremely disappointing season for Athletic, the club is now looking to make major changes this summer in hopes of turning things around. It is already known that manager Kuko Ziganda will be relieved of his duties at the end of the season and Argentine Eduardo Berizzo is set to take his place. In addition, the club has already completed the transfers for Ander Capa and Cristian Ganea, while also reaching an agreement with Dani Garcia who is out of contract in June. Now, the Lions have turned their attention to another potentially massive signing.
According to Basque source ETB, Athletic have begun negotiations with PSG to sign left-back Yuri Berchiche. The 28-year-old spent time at Lezama when he was a kid and is said to be interested in returning to Athletic this summer if a deal can be reached between the two clubs. With Berchiche widely viewed as the best Basque left-back in football, this transfer would go a long way in improving Athletic’s squad.
The report claims that PSG are currently demanding a fee of €30 million for Berchiche, which Athletic deems too steep and are hopeful of being able to reduce that number. The French giants signed the left-back from Real Sociedad over the summer for €13 million in hopes of him taking over as the starting left-back, but Berchiche has not featured as much as he expected. A move to Athletic would immediately see Berchiche jump into the starting lineup at a position that has been questionable at best over the last two seasons.
Additionally, Nika Cuenca has since reported that Athletic are indeed in talks to sign the 28-year-old and are hoping to bring down the asking price to somewhere between €15 million and €20 million. Meanwhile Thomas Tuchel, who is expected to take over as the new PSG manager in the summer, will have a say in the matter as well. The German will want to bring in a replacement for Berchiche so that must be factored into the transfer story as well. The biggest issue at this point remains the asking price.
With Athletic’s serious interest in Berchiche and the player’s willingness to return to the club, negotiations with PSG will continue. It is widely known that the French club needs to sell off assets this summer in order to comply with Financial Fair Play requirements and the Lions look to be ready to take advantage of that. For now the transfer fee is the biggest hurdle that Athletic will have to overcome in negotiations, but it is clear that the Basque giants are serious about bringing Berchiche to the San Mamés this summer.
