This summer is going to be an interesting time at Athletic Club. Current manager Kuko Ziganda will be leaving and it looks certain that his replacement will be Argentine Eduardo Berizzo. Meanwhile, a few new faces will be coming to the San Mamés with Ander Capa and Cristian Ganea already signed and Dani Garcia agreeing to terms with his contract coming to an end in June. That being said, the Lions may be just getting started on strengthening the squad ahead of an important season with the club now eyeing a big move.
According to a breaking report from El Correo, Ander Herrera could become Athletic’s top transfer target. The Lions are said to have contacted the midfielder in January and let him know that, if he wants to return, the club is ready to make him one of the highest paid players on the team. Reports in England claim that Herrera is one of several Manchester United players who are expected to be on the chopping block this summer and Athletic are ready to take advantage of that.
The exclusive report goes on to say that the possible transfer is entirely up to Herrera. If Manchester United do intend on selling him it will be up to the 28-year-old to determine where he wants to go. If he does want to return to the San Mamés, Athletic have let him know that they will make him their priority in the summer and will pursue his transfer with everything they have, including entering into strenuous negotiations with Manchester United. Recently, reports surfaced claiming that Athletic is Herrera’s preferred destination if he leaves Old Trafford this summer which, of course, is further fueling the story.
With Berizzo set to take over as Athletic’s manager, the club is looking to put together the strongest squad possible for him. Bringing in a player like Ander Herrera would immediately improve the team and give the Lions another star to help them compete in La Liga. In addition, Athletic are still chasing Newcastle midfielder Mikel Merino and would love to bring in both players in what could only be described as one of the best summers in club history. For President Josu Urrutia, who only has one year left on his term before elections take place next summer, bringing Herrera back to the San Mamés would be absolutely massive.
It must be said that bringing back Ander Herrera is very complicated. The exclusive report says that the Athletic board are not optimistic about their chances, but that they will pursue the midfielder until it becomes clear that the transfer won’t happen. Manchester United must first decide whether or not the 28-year-old is a part of their plans for next season then, if he isn’t, Herrera will have to make the ultimate decision of where he will play. Other clubs such as Atletico Madrid and AC Milan are also said to be interested in the Basque midfielder which could further complicate things. Only time will tell how this story will play out but, regardless of what happens, fans are excited to see the club pursuing such a big move after a very disappointing season.
