Remiro: I Would Like To Stay In The First Team After My Loan
Athletic Club is a treasure trove of goalkeeping talent. Everyone is aware of the quality of Kepa Arrizabalaga who is quickly becoming one of the best in football, and Iago Herrerín has also proven that he can be a regular starter for a club in La Liga. Meanwhile, players like Alex Remiro and Unai Simon are waiting in the wings and ready for their chances to take that next big step. Rermiro is currently on loan at Huesca where he has been one of the most outstanding players in the Segunda. The 23-year-old recently spoke with Cadena Ser where he admitted that he would like to be in the Athletic first team next season, but that right now his focus is on helping Huesca earn promotion.
“Yes, I would like to stay in the Athletic first team after my loan is complete. Hopefully I can help get Huesca to the Primera because that is my focus right now. I think I have had a good year and I want to finish the season with good feelings and then I will see where I will play next year. Am I superstitious? I like to be organized…not walk on any line, step onto the field with my right foot, then I touch all the posts and my boot. There’s more.”
Remiro has often been spoke of in the same breath as Kepa due to the fact that both keepers grew up together at Lezama and were often in the same team competing against each other. He says that he has been lucky to train alongside Kepa, while also praising fellow Athletic keeper Iago Herrerín. Remiro also made it clear that he and Kepa never spoke about the later potentially joining Real Madrid in January.
“I have been lucky to train beside Kepa, but this is a different year. He has always stood out and the club has been raising him and myself as well. He is a great teammate and a great goalkeeper, Iago [Herrerín] is too. Did I ever speak with Kepa about leaving for Real Madrid? No, there was never a conversation about being able to return if he left. It isn’t something that we talked about.”
Remiro has been in sensational form this season and is a big reason why Huesca currently sit third in the Segunda table. The Aragonese-based club are in strong position to earn promotion to the top flight which would be a remarkable achievement for a club that wasn’t expected to challenge for a top spot. For now Remiro’s future remains a question mark but Athletic has already made it known that they want to extend his contract which is set to expire after next season. The 23-year-old has proven that he is ready for the next step so this summer will be a very important time in his career.
