Real Madrid 1-1 Athletic Club: Postgame Player Comments
Athletic Club put on a strong showing at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, playing to a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid. Iñaki Williams opened up the scoring in the first 15 minutes, while Kepa Arrizabalaga continually made great saves to keep Real Madrid off the scoreboard. A deflected goal from Cristiano Ronaldo close to stoppage time saw the home side rescue a point, but it was clear that the Lions had pushed them for the full 90 minutes. After the game Iñaki and Kepa both spoke to the media and were disappointed that they only earned one point, but were proud of how their team played.
“Aduriz always tells me that when I’m facing the keeper and that angle I need to chip the ball. I tried it today and it worked. The team was very compact and we stood up to Real Madrid. The fans are with us and we wanted to give them a win. There were other chances like Raúl García hitting the crossbar in the second half, but the victory wasn’t meant to be. The fans can be proud of us.”
“I was eager to play here, since I’ve never played at the Bernabeu. We were close to winning and played a complete game, but they had more chances to score. In the first half we put the fear in them and when they scored, in the end, it gives you a bit of anger. I felt the pressure in the first half, but I tried to isolate myself from it and focus on playing the game and defending the goal. Zidane’s comments about me? I don’t have to value the words of someone who isn’t my coach. I’m happy to help my team. I renewed for seven and a half years with Athletic, the club where I have been since I was nine years old. I’m very happy and satisfied.”
