Iñigo Córdoba Signs Contract Extension With Athletic Club Through 2022

Iñigo Córdoba has been one of the brightest parts of an otherwise disappointing season for Athletic Club. The winger was promoted over the summer and, due to a serious injury to Iker Muniain, was thrust into a role that he wasn’t expected to play. The Lezama product found himself playing heavy minutes and having to adjust to the Primera game as quickly as possible. It took a few months to find his feet, but since February he has been in great form and Athletic responded by securing his future at the club.

Iñigo Córdoba has renewed with Athletic until 2022 (Athletic Club)

On Monday Athletic Club officially announced that Iñigo Córdoba had renewed his contract until 2022. The new deal contains a release clause of €30 million that can rise to €40 million if certain conditions are met. Additionally, the 21-year-old also received a wage increase, although those specific numbers have not been brought to light as is usually the case with Athletic.

The interesting thing to note about the renewal is that his contract was only extended by one year and that his base release clause, of €30 million, stayed the same. This was clearly more about repaying Córdoba for the role he currently has in the team and for the spectacular debut season he has had when he was only expected to play a minor role in the squad. Regardless, both sides were eager to get the deal done and further secure Córdoba’s future at his boyhood club. He had the following to say about his contract renewal.

“I am happy for this opportunity that the club has given me. I hope it is the first of many renewals and that I will be able to enjoy Athletic for many years. My renewal has been simple, Athletic is my home. I have been here for nine years and I hope to continue for many more.”

Córdoba has featured in 35 games for Athletic so far this season, including 24 in La Liga. He has carved out his own role within the team and his future at the San Mamés looks bright. Last week the 21-year-old scored his first goal for the senior squad in a 3-1 win over Villarreal, giving fans a glimpse of what is to come in the years ahead. Córdoba joined Lezama when he was only 12 years old and he is already fulfilling his childhood dream less than a decade later.
