Eduardo Berizzo is moving ever closer to becoming the next Athletic Club manager and that has fans excited. The Argentine became the frontrunner for the job over a week ago and it didn’t take long for negotiations to reach an advanced stage. Berizzo is said to really like way that the club is run and that he has already told other interested teams, such as Colo Colo and Flamengo, that he plans to sign with the Basque giants. As the negotiations continue, more and more information will come to light and that is exactly what happened on Friday.
According to Radio Marca, Berizzo was recently in Chile but has since made the trip to finalize negotiations with Athletic Club. Rafa Beato has now reported that Athletic submitted an offer to the Argentine for two seasons that would allow €1.5 million in wages to be shared among the coaching staff. Beato goes on to say that Berizzo responded to the offer by asking for a single year contract, but one with €2.5 million in wages.
The first thing to note about this report is the duration. With Athletic’s Presidential elections set to take place next summer the club is only able to offer a one year deal. In fact, several different reports have all confirmed up to this point that Berizzo “was willing” to accept a one year deal with the goal of proving himself for a long term contract, not that it was his idea. Hearing that the club offered a longer stay and the Argentine requested a single season doesn’t quite add up, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is false.
Secondly, the wage demands shouldn’t be an issue. Both parties are in the middle of negotiations and money is often a big focus at this stage of discussions. The fact that Berizzo has traveled to continue negotiations and has told other interested clubs of his intent to sign with Athletic shows the seriousness of the situation. In fact, some reports even claim that the reason he has traveled to finalize talks is because he wants to go ahead and start preparing for the preseason. Berizzo loves the idea of coaching Athletic and the Basque giants have made him their top priority; all that is left is figuring out the final details. Barring any unforeseen changes, Eduardo Berizzo will be the new Athletic Club manager.
