When Yeray returned to the squad in January following a second victory over testicular cancer many expected him to walk back into the starting lineup. However, the spectacular form of Unai Nuñez made it difficult to jump right back into things, which has been a nice problem for Athletic to have. Both center-backs are budding stars in La Liga and have proven that they are pillars for the future of Athletic Club. However, looking at the present there is an issue that must be figured out before this weekend’s match against Deportivo La Coruña and it all revolves around Yeray.
Nuñez picked up a yellow card during Monday’s 3-1 win over Villarreal which means he is suspended for Saturday’s clash at the San Mamés. Yeray is the simple choice to take his spot in the lineup, but there is no guarantee that the 23-year-old will even be available for Kuko Ziganda. He has missed the last three games due a muscle injury and is in danger of leaving the team with only Xabi Etxeita available to pair up with Iñigo Martinez in the center of the backline.
Leading up to the game against Villarreal manager Kuko Ziganda revealed in his pre-match press conference that Yeray might be able to make the trip. The defender had been training with his teammates for a few days, although he was not able to participate in every drill. If he wasn’t able to get clearance Ziganda stated that he fully expected him to be ready for the next game and that is what everyone will be watching leading in to the weekend.
As of right now Yeray does not have the medical green light clearing him to play. To get that he must first prove that he is fully recovered in training, meaning he only has two days to do so as the players will have Wednesday off. Sources around the club believe that he will be good to go for Saturday’s game and there isn’t much concern about it right now. Still, with only seven games remaining on the calendar every point is vital so fans will be hoping to see Yeray’s name in the squad list on Friday. All signs point to the Lezama product being cleared to play, but there will be a bit of worry until that actually happens.
