Córdoba: I Hope My Goal Is The First Of Many

The past 12 months have been a whirlwind for Iñigo Córdoba. Over the summer he got the chance to train with the first team in hopes of earning a promotion and that is exactly what happened. In fact, he impressed so much that he was given a regular role under manager Kuko Ziganda who had also coached him while at Bilbao Athletic. Despite playing consistently, the winger was missing one thing – his debut goal. That finally came in Monday’s 3-1 victory over Villarreal and it was special for the 21-year-old.

After the game Córdoba admitted that he had a rush of emotions after scoring but was able to reflect after things calmed down. He thought about his family who had supported him throughout his time in the youth system and how far he had come. Despite it taking so long to score his debut the Lezama product said that he wasn’t feeling anxious about it. Still, he was happy for it to finally happen and is hoping that it is just the first of many more in his Athletic career.

“It was a rush of emotions and then when things calmed down you remember your whole family and all the people who have supported you during the years that you competed in the lower levels and the youth teams. I especially remembered my family. I have wanted to score for a long time, but it wasn’t a thorn in my side. I was not anxious or bothered because I had not scored. I hope it is the first of many. Today’s game was a complete one. We put a team that is competing for Europe on the ropes and the return of Muniain is very important for the team.”

Córdoba and Athletic Club will be back in action on Saturday when they will host Deportivo La Coruna at the San Mamés. The Lions only have seven games left to make up a seven point gap for the final European spot in the La Liga table. It definitely won’t be easy but the Basques have been in great form over the last two games and are committed to fighting until the very end in hopes of reaching their goals. There is a lot of work ahead, but for now Córdoba and his teammates will be celebrating a very special win at Estadio Cerámica.
